Payroll estimate, not a tax return

From gross pay to your bank account

  1. Start with gross pay

Gross salary is the amount agreed before employee deductions. Employer contributions are paid on top, not taken from your net salary.

  2. Apply social contributions and relief

Employee social contributions reduce the income-tax base. A submitted tax book enables the applicable minimum and registered allowances.

  3. Calculate income tax

Regular monthly Latvian-insured payroll withholds 25.5% on the remaining taxable amount, floored at zero. Net pay is gross minus employee contributions and income tax.

What does that look like in practice?

Salary calculator questions

What is the difference between gross and net salary?

Gross is pay before employee taxes and contributions. Net is the amount left after them. Always check which one a vacancy or offer states, and whether it is monthly, yearly or hourly.

What changes when I submit my tax book?

Your chosen employer can apply the tax-free minimum: €550/month in 2026 or €510 in 2025 for a standard employee, plus eligible registered allowances. Without the book here, this calculator applies neither. Unused eligible relief may be reconciled through your annual return.

Does every child count as a dependant?

No. Use only dependants confirmed in VID EDS for the relevant period. The €250 allowance reduces taxable income; it is not an extra €250 paid with your salary.

Can I calculate a salary for an old-age pensioner?

Yes. The old-age pension option uses 9.25% employee and 20.77% employer social contributions. With a tax book at the employer, €500/month of the pensioner minimum applies to salary. Disability pensions and other special insurance categories may need a different calculation.

Why might my payslip or annual return differ?

Partial months, sickness, bonuses, multiple jobs, benefits and changes in eligibility can change payroll. Annual progressive tax and solidarity-tax settlements are separate. Yearly mode is a 12-month payroll projection, not a tax-return calculation.

Does the city affect salary tax?

The standard Latvian payroll rules used here do not change between Riga, Liepāja or another city. Job-market salaries and living costs can differ, so compare those separately.

Official sources & calculation scope

For Latvian-resident employees insured in Latvia, with unchanged settings throughout the selected period. Old-age pensioners are supported; other special insurance categories, self-employment, foreign insurance and final annual tax settlements are not. Only eligible, registered tax relief should be selected.
